De-cluttering the Mind

Many of us know the importance of detoxing the body, but this is only a start. To really reap the benefits of a detox, it is imperative to clear the mind of clutter and toxins. Mental clutter can create difficulties with focus, being easily fatigued, stressed, or feeling overwhelmed. It can also affect your health, creating health issues and stress on the body. When there is lack of self-care for the mind an increase in emotional distress and overall feelings of unhappiness can occur. One may also notice a susceptibility of making frequent mistakes and errors.

Due to busy schedules, reliance on electronics & overall chaos in the world, we are exposed to mental and emotional toxins constantly. Our brains are bombarded with social media, people's problems, past thoughts or pent up frustration and pain. Our minds are also cluttered with everyday stressors from societal concerns and worries (ie. COVID and the election).

There are some steps you can take daily to help with ridding the mind of clutter, pain, distress and anything that may be fatiguing you. Here are some healthy solutions.

  •  Identify your negative thoughts. Write them down and literally let them go. When you find them arising replace it with a healthy belief or mantra. Identify emotions surrounding these thoughts and validate the emotion. Notice any tension in your body when having a thought that doesn't "sit" right with you. Use progressive muscle relaxation to release the tension in your body (tightening the muscle then releasing).
  • Do a digital restructuring. Remove things or people that are unhealthy from social media or sites that may bring you down. Clean up that watch-list of shows that are going to deplete you emotionally and replace with things that brighten you up.
  •  Clean the space around you. Physical clutter can create mental clutter. Your living space says a lot about you and your self-care. If you have a lot of clutter in your home or work space, take time to purge. You will not only feel refreshed and renewed, but also more motivated in that space.
  •  Meditate or practice Mindfulness. Meditating for even just 5 minutes a day refocuses your mind. It restores and enhances a sense of calmness. Learn to incorporate Mindfulness into your day. Start by simple practices like fully acknowledging sensations when washing dishes, showering, cooking, etc. If ruminating thoughts start to flood in, imagine the thoughts being carried away by a lily pad or cloud.
  •  Down-time from electronics.  Spend a little time each day to unplug from phones, computers, TV, any electronic device. All that time depletes the mind and only creates more toxins. Spend time outdoors and get fresh air. Create an area of your house which is an electronic free-zone to go to when needing a break.
  •  Rest. Again make sure that the area that you sleep in is clear of clutter. Create a nice ambiance by diffusing essential oils, playing spa music or using a Himalayan Salt Lamp.

& distracts you from the amazing things you are meant to do".
